Woerden, the capital of the green heart
This beautiful fortified town is surrounded by green nature and is very centrally located. The cosy centre and unique sights make Woerden a popular destination for days out and weekends away.
The city has a cozy church square with several terraces and delicious eateries.
Also for shoppers there is plenty of choice of beautiful boutiques and popular shops.
Woerden is the place to be in the Green Heart, where sailing, cycling and walking routes show the outdoors and lead to the small villages of Harmelen, Zegveld, Kamerik and Oudewater (with the famous Heksenwaag). Or take the train and walk within fifteen minutes in the centre of Utrecht or Gouda.
Woerden is a real cheese city. It is therefore the best place to treat the audience to a famous cheese festival; the farmer's cheese market! The city has an age-old cheese market tradition that still exists today. As early as 1885, the first batches of cheese were transported from the surrounding countryside to the center of the city of Woerden for trading. The Boerenkaasmarkt is held every Saturday in the summer months, in 2020 from 6 June to 29 August.
